TIME have named Mariah Carey as their number one Ultimate Pop Star. The superstar diva beat the likes of Rihanna, Usher, Madonna and Beyoncé to claim the top spot. This wasn’t just some list voted for by pop fans or complied by popularity. Oh no, TIME took their time to gather up a lot of information and put together a serious infograph that contains information about artists and their careers dating all the way back to 1960.
To find out who the Ultimate Pop Star is, TIME specifically had a look at every song that made it on to the Billboard top 10 since 1960, the number of songs by each artist on the list and length of each artist’s career. It was a laborious task I’m sure but it produced some interesting results.
We’re not one bit surprised by Mariah coming out on top. After all, the 44-year old has been around for a few decades now and continues to release chart topping music. TIME calculated their ultimate pop star by serving points to each song an artist had in the chart giving them more points for the amount of weeks that song remained in the charts. For instance, Mariah started out in 1990 with ‘Love Takes Time’ reaching the number one spot for 7 weeks. The last entry she has on the graph is from 2009 when her track ‘Obsessed’’ peaked at number 7 for 4 weeks. Carey earned her title of Ultimate Pop Star thanks to her hugely successful career which produced tracks like ‘Emotions,’ ‘Fantasy,’ Honey,’ ‘Heartbreaker’ and ‘We Belong Together.’
There was some pretty stiff competition for Mariah with Rihanna making the number two spot thanks to 13 number one hits with 2008 and 2010 being her most successful years. Following close behind Riri is Usher. The R&B singer beat the Beatles to have the best single year out of everyone when he earned an impressive four number one hits and a combined stay of 88 weeks on the Billboard chart in 2004.
The Beatles and Madonna rounded out the top 5 respectively while the top 10 also featured Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Katy Perry and Boyz II Men. Interestingly, Janet beat her world famous brother by about 200 points but it’s Michael who was found to have the most consistent career from 1971 to 1995.
Some surprises include Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake who are viewed as a couple of the most successful artists in the world right now but didn’t even make it to 1,000 points. The Black Eyed Peas turned out to be more chart successful than Elvis Presley while T Pain actually beat Lionel Ritchie, Cher and Britney Spears. The chart world can be strange at times.
